A Himalayan sanctuary

Naomi Wilkinson, Kuoni’s head of marketing, takes a relaxing holiday to Oberoi Wildflower Hall in the foothills of the Himalayas.

Oberoi Wildflower Hall is a beautiful colonial-style hotel set high above Shimla in the foothills of the Himalayas. After a morning yoga session, we ate breakfast overlooking the snow-tipped peaks of the Himalayas. Later, we explored the nearby sanctuary (a private reserve) with a local guide and naturalist who pointed out the indigenous wild flowers – including strawberries and primulas which can be found jutting out of the mountain rocks.

The longer walks are not for the faint-hearted as they traverse the mountainside with small footpaths – but our guide provided tips on how to descend the trickier parts from his mountaineering experience. The numerous cedars and pines that cover the sanctuary are dramatic and you can see evidence of barking deer and gormals that live in this forest area.

We returned to the hotel and experienced a rejuvenating massage to relax our tired limbs, along with an aroma journey for the senses. Once we felt revived, we enjoyed a delicious dinner – you can ask the chefs to create any dish you desire and they will happily oblige with their wealth of experience. Oberoi Wildflower Hall is a place to nourish the soul and re-charge the body and mind.
