Festivals, ceremonies, arts, crafts, intricate architecture, superb shopping and stunning beaches - diverse Thailand truly does offer holidays for everyone.
Dotted with stunning temples, bustling Bangkok remains one of the best value destinations for seeking out some fantastic deals. If bargain hunting is a passion Chatuchak weekend market will be your heaven! Spreading 15,000 stalls over 35 acres you are sure to find just about anything you could want. It's definitely best to arrive early in the morning before too many people though, ensuring the 'best pickings'.
To avoid the heat opt for Suan Lum Night Bazaar - a trendy option at the moment for shopping by night as an alternative to the classic though slightly chaotic Patpong Night Market.
Made famous through James Bond films, the floating markets are a real insight into a traditionally Thai method of shopping! Float along in a small canoe through an array of fresh produce piled high in canoes - an experience that will take your breath away. The best market to visit is Damnoen Suduak, but be prepared for an early start as the market starts at 7am and arriving for the start is the best way to see the freshest fruit and vegetables.
Apart from elephant trekking, admiring temples and marveling at the arts and crafts that imbue the region, the celebrations of Loi Krathong are a spectacle not to be missed. Chiang Mai celebrates this festival in style in mid November (12.11.2008) each year through lantern processions, bamboo raft races and fireworks. Most dramatically thousands of lanterns (many sitting in banana leaf boats) are lit and floated down the Mae Ping River. The festival represents an act of appeasement to the Mother of Waters but also sends away grief with the lanterns.
For those seeking some of the most pristine experiences of stunning coastlines and island retreats that Thailand has to offer, head for one of the less established but strikingly beautiful Thai islands of Koh Yao Noi, Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi or Koh Racha - all dotted in the sweeping bay of Phang Nga, where limestone outrcrops protrude from emerald waters. Koh Yao and Koh Lanta are the least developed and offer an experience of unspoilt Thai islands as well as exciting activities such as rock climbing and cycling through local villages. Phi Phi and Koh Racha, surrounded by Marine National Parks are blessed with some of the clearest waters in Thailand - a haven for snorkelling enthusiasts, but be aware that in high season - November to April the most famous beach on Koh Racha and Tonsai, the heart of Phi Phi can get very busy.
