If you're left feeling 'piste off' by the usual ski and snowboard clichés, why not try something a little different this white season and venture out to some of the freshest slopes. Here are some of our hottest suggestions for a cooler winter.

Can't wait until winter to go on the ultimate skiing holiday? If you prefer winter powder to the soft summer snow of a European glacier, you can hear the satisfying crunch under your skis sooner than you think with one of our summer skiing destinations.

For diversity and culture.

Japan's diverse culture juxtaposes hyper-modern techno-cities with stunning oriental slopes and offers some of the most lavish scenery around. The uncrowded ski resort of Niseko offers fantastic ski and boarding conditions ideal for all levels. Located on the side of an extinct volcano on Japan's most northerly island - Hokkaido - the resort offers many well groomed runs and great back country for off-piste enthusiasts.

Hot hint: Combining a trip to Niseko with a stay in Tokyo is a must in order to make the most of the variety of culture and experiences around.

For the family.

If you're looking to travel out of season or would like to venture a bit more northerly, take a trip to the Arctic Circle where snow is guaranteed year round. For a family trip, visit Ylläs in Lapland, which features the longest slopes in Finland set amid unspoilt, natural landscapes.

Perfect for families, beginners and intermediate skiers and boarders, Ylläs offers a wide range of exciting activities from snowmobiling to dog-sledding, as well as flood lit skiing.

Hot hint: Just outside of Ylläs is the magnificent Snow Village, a mystical area set in the heart of the frozen forests. This village features the magnificent Snow Hotel with snow bar, snow restaurant and all sorts of interesting ice sculptures - a definite must see!

Something new in Canada.

Steadily growing in size and popularity, Kicking Horse is surrounded by the towering mountains of six of Canada's most picturesque National Parks. This resort is located in Golden, British Columbia, and offers excellent runs for beginners and intermediates.

Hot hint: Stay at the fabulous four-star Highland Lodge. It offers fantastic access to all six of the surrounding national parks as well as all the best ski runs.

Alternatively, the old mining town of Fernie, also in British Columbia, boasts an average snow fall of 29 feet each year, which is enough to cover a three-storey building. The variety of terrain offers something for everyone and the relaxed resorts are an ideal place to relax and unwind amongst some breathtaking views.

Hot hint: Fernie also offers five of the most enormous powder bowls, countless glades and numerous chutes, popular with the most advanced skiers. It is the perfect location to show off your skills!
