Despite the fact that we live in a digital age, it seems the most effective way of reminding ourselves of that perfect holiday moment is still the photograph. Of those we asked, 83 per cent rated holiday snaps as the best memoir from a fabulous trip, though videos come way down the scale, with less than 15 per cent considering them effective.

After great snaps, the two most influential factors are chatting with friends and family and eating foreign food. So, instead of buying the usual souvenirs, some local ingredients or a recipe book would be an original and effective way to remind you of great times.

But what makes the perfect holiday? According to our research, top of the list of key factors for the ideal holiday is destination, followed by weather, the people we travel with, then the views we see.

Our top memories are something we’ve seen and something we’ve experienced – both come in at 30 per cent. And our interviewees were an adventurous lot, with 79 per cent choosing to experience something new on holiday.

So, for anyone who hasn’t already booked their travels this year, we recommend doing or seeing something new on holiday – it’s the key to making your holiday truly memorable.
