Slumdog Millionaire inspires travel

The big screen hit Slumdog Millionaire is inspiring adventurous travellers to explore incredible India. You can learn how to photograph the Taj Mahal from an expert and get caught up in the glitter and romance of a Bollywood movie.

Slumdog Millionaire has picked up a whopping eight Oscars at the 2009 Academy Awards. The film – shot in Agra and Mumbai, India – tells the story of a teenager from the slums called Jamal Malik who wins the Hindi version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? It is suspected that Jamal is cheating and the film speeds back in time to find out how he knows the right answers.

It’s a harrowing, mesmerising – and in places funny – film that captures your attention with a sharp storyline, amazing cinematography and a catchy soundtrack. India’s slums are a sad reality depicted throughout this film, but the buzz, colours and famous landmarks of Agra and Mumbai stoke up a fire to explore incredible India for yourself. An escorted tour is one of the best ways to see India on holiday, using your guide’s local knowledge to reach the heart of intoxicating cities and spectacular landscapes.

Taj Tour, India

Our expert guide will introduce you to extraordinary India during our Taj Tour. Using local knowledge, we’ll show you around the chaotic, yet entrancing, Old Delhi and the masterpieces of New Delhi.

You can stay in Agra and visit the magical Taj Mahal. Here you’ll meet a professional photographer who can teach you the best ways to capture India’s iconic monument to love. Head for the ‘pink city’ of Jaipur, stopping to see the perfectly preserved deserted Mughal city of Fatehpur Sikri, and get caught up in the glitter and romance of a Bollywood film at the Raj Mandir cinema.

You can choose from three or four-star hotels and easily add on an extension to this classic six-night tour of north India. The Shimla extension takes you on a narrow gauge train through the foothills of the Himalayas; or add on the Tigers of Ranthambore extension and visit these incredible creatures during three game drives.

Slumdog extension

Part of Slumdog Millionaire was filmed in Mumbai’s Dharavi district, one of the biggest slums in Asia. Add on our Slumdog extension to your Taj Tour and you can experience the beauty that lies in this poverty-stricken district. A maze of alleyways where brightly-coloured fabrics hang out to dry, goats roam free and children play. Dharavi is the heart of small scale industry in Mumbai and you’ll see clay pots being made, recycling, leather tanning and poppadom making.
