We care about the planet and are doing out part to help protect coral reefs in Egypt and the Maldives.
If you love diving and snorkelling, visiting the coral reefs in Egypt or the Maldives is probably high on your travel wish list. But these fragile ecosystems are under threat from both climate change and tourism.
At Kuoni, we want to help protect these coral reefs, helping preserve them for our future generations and safeguard local livelihoods that tourism brings to these destinations.
Coral reefs are essential and complex living environments, protecting coasts from erosion and providing key life essentials for numerous types of animals and a valuable source of food for the local population.
These vital habitats have been under threat for centuries, withstanding the force of waves, wind and weather, yet they have continually renewed themselves. But increasing tourism, plus intense natural disasters due to climate change, pose a real threat to these eco-systems and are endangering the reefs’ regeneration.
Action is essential to preserve and protect these coral reefs so we’ve teamed up with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), one of the biggest conservation organisations.
The work involves spotting reefs most at threat from climate change and working with local authorities to help protect these eco-systems. We also work with local people to develop and action plans that protect endangered sea life such as sharks, dolphins and dugongs.
Protecting these coral reefs will benefit tourism, the local population and the marine life found in both Egypt and the Maldives.
