20 February 2009
Comedian and explorer Billy Connolly is starring in the brand new series Billy Connolly: Journey to the Edge of the World. The four-part adventure started on Thursday 19 February at 9pm on ITV1 and takes Billy across the arctic region of Canada and Alaska.
Billy tackles a remote journey through the Northwest Passage, which has been attempted – and failed – by many explorers before him. For most of the year, the passage inside the Arctic Circle is impassable due to the ice, but a few summer weeks allowed Billy to make this extraordinary journey.
The 10,000-mile trip takes Billy from Nova Scotia to the Pacific, clocking up memorable experiences such as spotting whales in Newfoundland and panning for gold in the Yukon. Along the way, Billy tells stories of men who pioneered sections of his journey, the legendary success stories and even more legendary failures.

If Billy’s journey inspires you, book our Atlantic Maritimes escorted tour, travelling through destinations such as Halifax, Lunenburg and the Cabot Trail.
Halifax
One of the first towns Billy visits is Halifax, where almost two million Europeans migrated to start a new life on the edge of the world. He is greeted by pipers and the town crier before looking around Pier 21, now a memorial to immigration, and discovers that 30 William Connollys emigrated there.
Lunenburg
Billy stops in Lunenburg, once North America’s fishing capital. Over fishing has left a dwindling cod supply and the town now relies on tourism to survive. Commercial cod fishing is now banned, but fishing with a hook and line is permitted. Billy takes to the seas with two fishermen, Ralph Church and Bobby Beringer, to see what they can catch, and Bobby tells Billy how he almost died when his boat froze over.
Cabot Trail
Billy dodges wandering moose as he rides a motorbike around Cape Britain’s western shore on the Cabot Trail – one of the top five motorcycle rides in the world.
