Tony De Quintal, tour director of AAT Kings, tells us what he finds so fascinating about mystical Uluru in Australia.

There is something wondrous and mystical about the red centre of Australia. It is a mesmerising landscape carefully created by ancient spirits as they travelled the earth, painting the desert with hues of reds, golds and purples. It is a world of vivid colours that teases our eyes with an aesthetic delight of beauty so rare, that all we feel is total awe.

What is it about this ancient story-filled dreamscape that calls people to it? I know - it is a power! Uluru has this power. It commands our attention. The power of this sacred monolith embraces us. You can feel it. Uluru is the spiritual heart of Australia. It still takes my breath away and it is only when you see it up close that you feel the presence of its uniqueness.

I have seen people’s tears well up, as the realisation sets in that they are finally here, and they cannot believe it. They have made a journey to a special place, and begin to understand why the Anangu – the traditional owners – want to share this place with them and the rest of world.

Uluru is a place of ancient laws, a place of respect and, most important, a place that is worth protecting for all of humanity to enjoy.

We also did a fantastic two-hour glass bottom boat tour looking down at the coral reef and then a three-hour whale watching cruise, where we were lucky enough to see a female with her calf.
