Kate Hilton, an Australia Personal Travel Expert at Kuoni, recalls a memorable trip to Perth and the Ningaloo Reef.
Perth is a city but on a smaller scale than, say, Sydney. It’s really attractive, on the sea and a great sailing centre. The Margaret River area, south of the city, has great beaches, lots of friendly towns, wineries and boat trips out to spot dolphins.
You could spend a couple of long days visiting the Pinnacles, which are spooky limestone pillars rising out of the desert; or Wave Rock, which is just like a huge surf roller, but made of limestone. They’re both around three and a half hours’ drive away.
North of Perth, around 14 hours’ drive, there’s Coral Bay and the Ningaloo Reef. It’s just north of the Tropic of Capricorn, so the water is warm for most of the year. The beaches, like most in western Australia, are sparkling white and beautifully clean.
Ningaloo is a virtually untouched barrier reef that is around 162-miles long, protecting a shallow, brilliant white sandy lagoon of clear water. You can walk from the beach straight to the coral reef for snorkelling.
We also did a fantastic two-hour glass bottom boat tour looking down at the coral reef and then a three-hour whale watching cruise, where we were lucky enough to see a female with her calf.
