During this seven-night tour you’ll spend five nights on the mountain, at first winding through farmed fields and pine forests, gazing up at Colobus monkeys swinging overhead. Camp and admire the views over the Kenyan plains, the next day passing icefields on the crater rim before crossing the lunar desert-like landscape. The final ascent starts at 1am by torchlight, climbing a steep, demanding switchback trail to Gilman’s Point to admire the spectacular sunrise.

How long have you been in this job? I have been climbing the mountain with clients for 10 years.

How fit do you need to be to climb the mountain? You have to be 100 per cent physically fit, with no problems with your lungs such as asthma or any type of breathing problem. You need to have a full check up with your doctor prior to climbing Kilimanjaro as you could reach heights of 5895 metres.

What are the best months for climbing Kilimanjaro? June to September.

Who is in the team? A leading guide is accompanied by porters, an assistant guide and cook. The number in the crew depends on the number of clients climbing.

What’s been the most memorable moment for you? In September 2009, I climbed with two clients who were boyfriend and girlfriend. After they reached the summit, the boyfriend surprised his girlfriend by asking her to marry him and, after descending to the base hotel, we had a party and celebrated.
